Well, the Windy City wasn’t so windy and cold today. Almost 60-degrees (F), beautiful, sunny, what you would simply call “nice.” Hate to go indoors but Profoto is putting on a demo of the new awesome Pro-8 Air over at Product Productions. It’s from noon to 8:00 P.M. so maybe I’ll stay just a short while and then go hang at the park. We’ll see.

Wow! Productions’ stage studios are awesome: a 30-foot cyc on the first floor with kitchen and meeting space; loft on second floor and outdoor shooting on the rooftop with a beautiful view of the city skyline and a half-wall cyc. Very nice! This is gonna be fun. Julia Rhoads from Lucky Plush Productions arrived with an 8-member dance troupe. Ballet, gymnastics, hip-hop, and jazz. Add music and food, 8 Profoto Pro-8a Air packs with four photographers connected via Profoto Air Remotes and you have one exciting shooting situation!

About 100 of us appeared throughout the day. So much for the shoot quick and leave idea. Every two hours another two dancers stepped in for a completely different look. With all four shooters cranking at 10 fps sometimes the strobes would spit out beautiful, dead-on accurate 20 fps. Completely, totally amazing! One guy said, “I learned more today than I did in two years of school” (we hope that’s an exaggeration but are flattered nonetheless).

Many thanks to Steve LaMonica of ProGear and Herb Pletcher of Calumet for helping answer questions and give advice. Everyone appreciated it, judging by the fact that no one seemed to want to leave. “A well run event,” noted someone else.

I couldn’t agree more.
