It started off with a low, steady beat. The packs came out, the umbrellas and heads went up. Meter, adjust, perfect. Big cyc done. Next, the small cyc. Add trampoline. The catering service wheeled in the bar service in a slow dance while we clamped a video camera up high and jacked it into a video projector clear across the studio and a huge LCD with its back against the entrance. There would be no way anyone would be missing the climax of this party.
Everyone was hustling as the sun set on Tribeca Skyline Studios, but you'd see people pause a moment to bask in the beauty of our little gas giant dipping into the Hudson and the Jersey skyline. What a view. The music picked up a bit and we knew a crowd was gathering downstairs.
Our first talent groups showed up and started stretching. The Amy Marshall Dance Company gave it their all on the big cyc wall while models Lindsey, Catherine, Jessica and Hannah from Race Management gave us fashion/action moves on a trampoline around the corner. The lights went down, the doors opened and the music swelled.
The dancers flew like birds and spun like tops. The models jumps and posed. Pro-8's were blasting away everywhere. Assistants who brought their cameras stepped up, slid on a Profoto Air unit and got to shoot their own images on the spot.
The sun disappeared altogether and suddenly doors burst open, revealing the Manhattan Samba Band with Carnaval dancers at the lead. Everyone rushed forward as the band rolled and thundered in a loop around the studio, coming to rest only when they reached the big cyc wall.
The crowd undulated and swayed as the band beat and danced their way through a long set of Samba music. It truly was Carnaval in New York City. The crescendo included photogs and assistants blazing away on drummers and dancers alike.
Big thanks to all of our sponsors: Our host, Serge Nivelle, an outstanding photographer in his own right is the brainchild behind Tribeca Skyline Studios.
Miguel Goodbar from Adorama Rentals was on the scene to support the photo assistants who saw the Pro-8a Air and wanted to talk about renting so they could enter our Call for Entries!
DPI sent over awesome digital techs to run the capture stations around the studio.
